528501 John Hancock
John Hancock, 1737-1793. First signer of the American Declaration of Independence. Very fine 6¼" x 8¼" document signed, John Hancock, as Governor of Massachusetts, October 29, 1783. This document bears Hancock's classic flamboyant signature. Hancock authorizes payment of £42.9s.3p.to the Town of Halifax, Massachusetts, "for the Abatement of a Fine & average price allow'd for raising two Men for which they were fined—to be paid out of the Tax granted in March 1783.” Hancock has boldly signed this pay warrant with his classic signature. The document is in very fine condition. It is laid down to the flyleaf of a book but has been removed from the book itself. There is some minor edge splitting at folds, but the mounting has kept the folds mostly intact. There is also some soiling around the edges. Overall it is a beautiful piece. Unframed. _____________ This item has been sold, but click here to see other items from American History that we are offering.
